Cedric was on hand to present the Directors Anniversary and the Cole Cup to Oli Cowl WEEK ENDING 5 JULY 2008 5 Jul 2008 - Peter Miliffe
The Directors Anniversary celebrated 19 years since the opening of the Tedburn St. Mary course. The event was in the traditional Stableford format and open to all members. In a sudden-death play-off 13 year old Oliver Cowl carded a gross birdie on the 1st extra hole to take the trophy on count back from Sam Hooper. Danny Hoskins (36) & Chris Baxendale (34) completed the division 1 line-up. Terry Webster won Division 2 with 37 points from Kate Blake, Steve Burchell & Bob Dyment who each carded 35 points. The division 3 winner was Tim Hemus with 34 points ahead of Graham Friend (33), Chris Maddocks (32) & Scott Taylor (32). The competition was combined with the juniors Cole Cup, sponsored by past junior organiser Chris Cole. Oliver Cowl therefore picked up this cup in addition to the Directors trophy. David Lee enjoyed spectacular success as he won Division 1 of the July midweek Stableford, his 42 points 9 clear of runners up Harold Cook & Ian Crocker, with Glen Deacon fourth with 32 points. Mike Glenny won Division 2 with 38 points, followed by Rob Holland (36), Roger McAndrews (34) & Mike Andrews (34). A seniors section Texas Scramble off one tenth combined handicap resulted in a win for Tony King, Ted Butt & Albert Fernandes with 54.9 from Austin Keates, David Cornfield, John Edwards & Frank Greenwood (57.3) and Roy Gibbs, Alan Skinner, Colin Bramley & Martin Kerrane (58.3). |

Vice captain Jeff Maynard presented the Scratch Cup to Paul Stevens and the Handicap Trophy to Kevin Pitts WEEK ENDING 29 JUNE 2008 5 Jul 2008 - Peter Miliffe
The club championships saw the largest field at Fingle Glen for a long time participating. We played 36 holes of medal play, with both scratch & net trophies up for grabs. The overnight leader Paul Stevens held his nerve to clock up a 36 hole total of (70 + 72) 142. Luke Burchell, Danny Hoskins, Chris Baxendale, Andy Rogers & Jamie Hoskins completed the scratch line-up. Kevin Pitts won the 36 hole handicap championship with net 133 on countback from Gavin Darke, followed by Scott Taylor, Oliver Cowl, Bob Feather & Rory Johnson. The club midweek competition was the Elliot Lobb Memorial trophy, sponsored by Mike Wilde in memory of his grandson who died tragically at an early age. Played in medal format the winner was Chris Tripp who carded an exceptional (69 – 5) net 64. Roy Darlington (86 – 21) 65 was second from Danny Hoskins (72 – 5) 67. The Walter Gordon cup is a medal competition devoted to the over 50’s. Head greenkeeper Brian Ridgeway took the honours with an excellent net 67, followed by Charles Wray (69) & Derek Govier (70). The seniors section June Stableford was well supported as ever. Martin Bagg won Division 1 with 38 points, followed by Derek Govier, Austin Keates & Terry Cook who all carded 36 points. The top score of the day was the 40 points of John Robinson at the head of Division 2 ahead of Alan Barr (36), Des Bulford (36) & Colin Hatherley (34). |

Captain Cedric presented the Bishop Cup to winner Oli Cowl WEEK ENDING 15 JUNE 2008 18 Jun 2008 - Peter Miliffe
The Bishop Cup was up for grabs in the main competition of the week, and produced a crop of outstanding scores. 13 year old Oliver Cowl reduced his handicap to 11 as he won Division 1 and the trophy with an amazing 44 points, just beating Kevin Pitts with 43 points into second place. Kevin however had the consolation of bringing his handicap down to a superb 5 and into category 1. Ian Crocker (42) & Chris Baxendale (41) completed the division 1 line-up. Steve Christopher won Division 2 with 41 points ahead of Chris Hazelwood (40), Bob Dyment (39) & Steve James (38). The Division 3 winner was Martin Read on 41 points, followed by Rob Holland (37), Peter Brockington (36) & Mike Wilde (35). The midweek club competition was the Swans Nest Monthly Medal, with carvery vouchers for the Exminster hostelry up for grabs in addition to the usual prizes. Sam Hooper won Division 1 and the medal with net 63 on countback from Ben Benfold & Lawrence Stevenson, with Phil Durbin 4th on net 66. Jane Lee topped the Division 2 list on net 66 ahead of Steve Ankers (67), Roger McAndrews and Martin Read (70). The junior section contested the Cullen Thermals Trophy, played in Medal format. 14 year old Rory Johnson won with (80 – 13) net 67, followed by James Tilke (92 – 22) 70 & Oliver Cowl (84 – 12) 72. The section also ran a 9 hole Stableford for those new youngsters yet to achieve full CONGU handicap status. Jacob Messenger aged 11 & with a junior handicap of 43 won this with 19 points from 12 year old Sam Finnimore playing off 44 & 11 year old Joe Baker off 35 who each carded 18 points. Still with the juniors Fingle Glen contested home and away East Devon junior league fixtures against Tiverton juniors. Fingle Glen won the home leg by 5 matches to 1 to prove that Friday 13th was not unlucky for the lads. The return leg ended in an honourable 3 : 3 draw. The seniors played a four man mystery team competition, won by Roger Anniss, Roy Gibbs, Tony Handford & Colin Bramley with 130 points, 1 clear of runners-up Bill Bird, Bernard Maunder, Ken Dowell & Tony Stratton. Third place went to Tony King, Roy Webber, John Crow & Les Colley with 125 points. The week concluded with the Ian Parsons Landscaping Invitational, a betterball Stableford off threequarter handicap allowance. Bob Dyment & partner Richard Raymont won with 44 points, followed by Steve Christopher & Dave Robertson on 42 and Steve Ankers & Les Phare on 41. |

The main competition of the week was the Club Cars Shield, a Bowmaker Stableford with mixed teams of 1 lady & 3 men, the men playing off ¾ handicap allowance. 2 scores counting per hole made for a relaxed outing and promised some fine scores. The winners were Kate & Adrian Blake, Chris Baxendale & David Lee on countback from Sam Brooks, James Harris, Andy Rogers & Jon Durbin after each team had carded 86 points. Laura Millar, Steve Burchell, Luke Burchell & Oliver Cowl were third with 85 points. Sponsor Pete Cassidy was on hand to present the prizes, and to present the captain with a cheque for £200 for his charity fund. The midweek club competition was in Medalford format, and David Lee emerged the clear winner with net 12, his nearest division 1 rivals Jim Powell (17), Graham Bulford (17) & Ian Thompson (18). Steve Christopher won division 2 with net 15 from Mike Wilde (21), Pete Money (21) & Murray Skinner (22). Bob Feather won the seniors section June monthly medal with net 69 on countback from Ken Farmer. Martin Bagg & Ron Bellamy completed the Division 1 line-up with net 70 each. Countback decided in favour of John Robinson ahead of Jon Crow in Division 2 after each had carded net 72, with Tony Handford (74) & Ken Broad (75) also in the prizes. |

Seniors Captain Roy Clemence was on hand to present the Open trophy to home winner Roy Webber & winning visitor Roger Perkins from Holsworthy golf club WEEK ENDING 31 MAY 2008 31 May 2008 - Peter Miliffe
In the Seniors Open the prize table was split between visitors & home players. Roger Perkins of Holsworthy GC was the top visitor with 36 points on countback from Norman Fleet of Tiverton, Doug Smallden from Great Torrington taking third place with 35 points. The top home player was Roy Webber with a superb 40 points from Cedric Chapple, Malcolm Heale & Chris Stokes (39) and John Robinson & Peter Miliffe (38). The seniors section endured some dreadful weather conditions to play their Monday Stableford competition. Ken Farmer won with a magical 36 points ahead of John Robinson (33), Mike Phillips (32) & Bill Bird (30). The winners of the midweek club competition, a Greensomes Stableford, were Pete Money & Chris Church who carded 46 points. Countback gave second place to the 44 points of David Lee & James Urquhart ahead of Alan Baxendale & John Spiller, prizes also going to Martin Read & Steve Christopher and Rory Johnson & Chris Baxendale, each pair returning 41 points. The week concluded with a betterball Stableford played off ¾ handicap. Steve & Luke Burchell won with 46 points, 1 clear of runners-up Sam Hooper & Chris Baxendale. Dave Webb & Mark Welland (43), Brian Ridgeway & Den Andrews (41) and Adrian Blake & Steve Christopher (41) were also amongst the prizes. |

With the new competition season rapidly approaching it is time to call in all our club trophies, and all winners from the 2007 season are asked to return the silverware to the club by mid-March. This will give us time to get them checked over, polished and engraved.
