WEEK ENDING 7 AUGUST 2010
11 Aug 2010
Last weekend saw the inaugural Golfer and Non Golfer competition, an idea dreamt up by junior captain Oli Cowl where a CONGU player played the shots to the green and the non- golfer completed the putting on the green. The day yielded a fun and relaxed atmosphere and a great insight to the game of golf for the newcomers and made an excellent £800 for the captain’s charity Children’s Hospice South West. Michelle Underwood and her sister Karen Conway took first prize with 18 points. Danny Hoskins and Emily Earle were in second on 17 ahead of Dan Collier and Darren House also on 17. Congratulation must go to Oli Cowl for organising this excellent event as part of a school project. Fingle Glen juniors beat their Woodbury Park counterparts 6 : 0 in their latest East Devon Junior League outing, earning themselves a guaranteed place in the finals with a game in hand. They followed this up with an emphatic 6 : 0 win at home against Exeter juniors. Top score of the day in Tuesdays midweek stableford came from Adrian Bartlett in division 3 with a hugely impressive score of 47 points. Junior members George Wetherden and Joe Winsor took second and third spot with 40 and 39 points respectively. Another junior, Joe Baker led the way in division 1 with 39 points ahead of Sandy Urquhart on 37 and brother James on 36. Guy Hoskins’ score of 41 points was enough to take top spot in division 2, 3 shots clear of Mike Glenny on 38 and Terry Harrison with 37. The Saturday competition was in pursuit of the Market Carpets Trophy. The trophy went to the division 1 winner Luke Burchell who carded a magnificent 44 points off his handicap of 5. The inaugural playing of the Bridgeman Invitational, sponsored by general manager Andy Bridgeman, attracted a bumper field and ended in a sudden death play-off. The format was betterball Stableford off a generous full handicap allowance, and at the close Nigel Hoskins & Paul Edworthy (Downes Crediton) & Andy Collman & Jack Jordan (Exeter) were tied on 48 points each. Nigel & Paul however took the title with a gross par at the first extra hole. The day raised an outstanding £215 for the captain’s charity. As defending champions of the Tyrol Team Classic, the team of Andy Rogers, Danny Hoskins, James Harris and Jamie Hoskins competed at the Kendleshire Golf Club near Bristol in the National Finals hoping to book their place in the grand finals to be held in Austria. Betterball scores of 42 points from Andy and Danny and 44 from James and Jamie were enough to secure joint top spot and a safe passage through to Austria. The highlight of the day came from James Harris on the Par 5 8th were he holed a 6 iron from 200 yards for an albatross 2. |
DEVON COUNTY SCRATCH KNOCKOUT CHAMPIONSHIP
In its inaugural year, the first three rounds of the innovative county scratch foursomes have taken place. The format of 3 pairs of scratch foursomes matchplay has proved to be tough and has put our lads talents to the test against some of the best players in the county.
In the first round we beat Exeter Golf & Country Club 2 : 1 in their own back yard. Wins for Christ Tripp and Paul Stevens on the 18th and a nail biting win for Jamie Hoskins and Luke Burchell on the 20th green were enough to see us through. The next round was a very tasty home tie against Honiton which we won 2 1/2 : 1/2. Sandy Urquhart & James Harris and Jamie Hoskins & Luke Burchell won their matches by impressive margins. Chris Tripp & Paul Stevens were 4 down with 5 to play but rescued a most dramatic half. We were given a home draw against our arch rivals Sidmouth in round 3, and thrashed them 3 : 0. Chris & Paul won 5 & 3, Sandy & James Urquhart won 4 & 3 and Jamie Hoskins & Luke Burchell won on the final green.
This confirmed Fingle Glen as East area champions. We now go forward to play against Churston (the champions of South Devon) in the semi final, this to be staged at Yelverton. The second semi final is between Yelverton and Saunton.
GOOD LUCK TO OUR LADS!
