6 Jul 2010

The main competition of the week was the Directors Anniversary Trophy, celebrating 21 years since the opening of Fingle Glen.  The competition was in Stableford format, open to all sections of the club.  A gross birdie at the first extra hole was enough to secure the trophy for Colin Durbin after he and Guy Hoskins, winning divisions 1 & 2 respectively, had each carded 42 excellent points.  Colin’s twin brother Jon took second place in division 1 with 39 points on countback from Luke Burchell whilst Mark Welland (41) & Mike Follett (38) featured in division 2.  Peter Brockington won division 3 with 40 points, followed by Alison Horton (37), Anwen Breading (36) & Bridget Culver (36).

A hole in one by Graham Bulford was the highlight of the midweek Stableford.  The 2001 club captain  recorded the first ace of his golfing career at the 133 yard 9th hole.  This did not carry him into the prizes however as Chris Church won division 1 with 41 points ahead of James Urquhart (38) & Gordon Bird (36).  Terry Harrison won division 2 with 39 points followed by Andy Shabytah & Roger McAndrews with 35 points each.

Bad luck to our lads in the Palairet Plate qualifiers.  With the top 4 club going through to finals day our lads came equal 3rd, but missed out by virtue of the score of our third pairing.  Congratulations however to our stars Paul Stevens & Chris Tripp who carded a magnificent 40 points, the top score of the day by a clear 4 point margin.

The seniors section Betterball Stableford was won by Ron Bellamy & Dave Farnell with a massive 50 points, 3 clear of runners-up John Robinson & Tony Dodd.  Peter Trott & Austin Keates were third with 45 points.

It has been an outstanding week for Fingle Glen ladies.  Ann Hazelwood, Paula Cowl & Anwen Breading won the Dreamaway charity competition at Stover Golf Club, their prize being a golf break in Spain.    Played in betterball Stableford format with 2 scores to count they carded 92 points, 2 clear of the runners-up.

They followed this up by winning their 6th round clash against Weymouth ladies in the national Mail on Sunday tournament.  Lady captain Ann Hazelwood won her game 3 & 2, Sandra Townsley won 5 & 4 & Ellen Norton won 4 & 2.  A half for Jane Lee confirmed a 3 ½ : 1 ½ victory.  They have now been given a home draw in the next round, this time against Cape Cornwall.  These are the last 2 clubs from the South West remaining in the competition.

The ladies section have also won their way through to the quarter finals of the county-wide Sheelah Creasy Bowl.  A convincing 6 : 1 home win against Holsworthy ladies sealed progression to the next stage, to be played this year at Warren.

Not to be outdone Jane Lee & Andy Rogers contested the Devon County Palairet Cup, a 27 hole Mixed Foursomes Stableford competition, played this year at Stover golf club.  They won with a grand total of (39 + 20) 59 points, 4 clear of their nearest rivals.

On the domestic front EWGA Medals 7 & 8 were up for grabs in the latest ladies competitions.  Ellen Norton won medal 7 with net 72 whilst medal 8 went to Amanda Winsor with net 70.

THE CHAMPIONS

 DEVON COUNTY SCRATCH KNOCKOUT CHAMPIONSHIP

In its inaugural year, the first three rounds of the innovative county scratch foursomes have taken place. The format of 3 pairs of scratch foursomes matchplay has proved to be tough and has put our lads talents to the test against some of the best players in the county.

In the first round we beat Exeter Golf & Country Club 2 : 1 in their own back yard. Wins for Christ Tripp and Paul Stevens on the 18th and a nail biting win for Jamie Hoskins and Luke Burchell on the 20th green were enough to see us through.  The next round was a very tasty home tie against Honiton which we won 2 1/2 : 1/2.    Sandy Urquhart & James Harris and Jamie Hoskins & Luke Burchell won their matches by impressive margins. Chris Tripp & Paul Stevens were 4 down with 5 to play but rescued a most dramatic half.  We were given a home draw against our arch rivals Sidmouth in round 3, and thrashed them 3 : 0.  Chris & Paul won 5 & 3, Sandy & James Urquhart won 4 & 3 and Jamie Hoskins & Luke Burchell won on the final green.

This confirmed Fingle Glen as East area champions.  We now go forward to play against Churston (the champions of South Devon) in the semi final, this to be staged at Yelverton.  The second semi final is between Yelverton and Saunton.

GOOD LUCK TO OUR LADS!
